Microsoft unveils new education package for Nigerian schools
Microsoft Corporation, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, has introduced an educational framework for the digital transformation of primary and secondary schools in the country.
Our correspondent learnt that part of the framework is a technology solution, Microsoft 365, which can help schools to upload the scores of their pupils and make them accessible to parents. The solution, developed under the ‘Windows in the Classroom’ programme, was done in collaboration with a Nigerian firm, Sidmach Technologies.
The Microsoft Education Programmes Manager, Jordan Belmonte, in an interview with our correspondent, said the package would also help schools to track their pupils’ attendance and assist parents to monitor their children’s academic performance.

Candidates protest UTME date
Scores of candidates, who registered for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, on Monday protested in Lagos against the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s decision to schedule the examination for March.
The protesting candidates were led by the National President of the Association of Tutorial School Operators, Mr. Dotun Sodunke. Many of them were seen carrying placards, which bore various inscriptions.
Addressing journalists during the protest, Sodunke warned that Nigerians might witness mass failure; if JAMB went on to hold the examination as scheduled.
Arguing that the board’s decision to fix the date of the examination for March was not in the best interest of the candidates, he said the latter needed enough time to complete the UTME syllabus before sitting the examination.

Send your child to school or risk imprisonment
The Bayelsa State Government has vowed to arrest and prosecute any parent who refuses to allow his child to acquire formal education.
The decision came on the heels of the signing into law of the Compulsory Primary and Secondary Education Law by Governor Seriake Dickson.
Addressing journalists on Thursday after a meeting by the State Executive Council, the Commissioner for Education, Jonathan Obuebite, said that with the signing of the bill into law, every child of school age must be enrolled in any of the various model schools in the state. Obuebite warned that the parents or guardians of any child seen loitering or hawking during school hours would be dealt with as provided in the new law.
