LAUTECH threatens to resume strike

Workers at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) on Wednesday threatened the Oyo State government and its Osun state counterpart that it will resume its strike action in two weeks time, if the states refuse to fulfill it’s agreement with the union.

The Union in a statement jointly signed by its chairman Biodun Olaniran and the secretary, Toyin Abegunrin, said it was surprising that the governments refused to attend to their funding responsibilities of the University even after it has carried out auditing of both personnel and accounts.
LAUTECH, a higher institution jointly owned by the Osun and Oyo states government recently resumed from its eight month-old strike after the two states agreed to pay it’s outstanding debt to the purse of the institution.

JUNE 12 declared as DEMOCRACY DAY

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that effective 2019 Nigeria’s Democracy Day, marked every May 29 for the past 18 years, be shifted to June 12 to honour Moshood Abiola, the winner of the 1993 presidential election.President-Muhammadu-Buhari speaking

Election data showed Mr Abiola won the polls but he was never formally declared winner and was not sworn into office by the military government of Ibrahim Babangida.

Mr Abiola was later imprisoned by the Sani Abacha’s military regime as he struggled to actualise his mandate. He died in prison in 1998.

Successive governments have brushed aside calls for Mr Abiola to be honoured and for the federal government to recognise June 12 as democracy day.

The Buhari government said Mr Abiola will now be conferred with nation’s highest honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR. The honour is exclusively conferred only on presidents and former presidents.

The government also said Mr Abiola’s running mate in that election, Babagana Kingibe, is to be conferred with the second highest honour of the Grand Commander of the Niger, GCON.

Also to receive a GCON is the late Nigeria’s foremost pro-democracy activist, Gani Fawehinmi.

Lagos State declares Wednesday “Yoruba Speaking Day” in Schools with all Lessons to be taught in Yoruba

Lagos State declares Wednesday "Yoruba Speaking Day" in Schools with all Lessons to be taught in Yoruba - BellaNaija

The Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has directed all schools in the state to begin all classes in Yoruba on Wednesdays, The Cable reports.

The directive was given to both private and public schools.

The Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule, passed the directive across to Public School principals and head teachers in a meeting, declaring Wednesdays “Yoruba Speaking Day.”

The National Anthem is also to be sung in Yoruba Language, she informed the principals, and Yoruba Language has been made compulsory. She said:

Gov. Ambode wants me to pass this message to you, that henceforth, Yoruba language be made compulsory in both private and public schools.

The national anthem must be sung in Yoruba on a daily basis too.

The Egbe Akomolede has done the translation and we will send the copies of the Yoruba version to your schools by Monday so you can begin to teach the students.

I have also met with the owners of private schools and we have relayed this directive to them.

We are also considering translating the textbooks of other subjects into Yoruba Language because I believe that when students are taught in their mother language, learning will be easy and their level of performance will improve.

The state government is passionate about this Law, so we do not lose our language, culture and heritage.

She appealed to all present to support the Lagos State government’s Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law.

The state’s Ministry of Education is conducting an assessment to determine the number of Yoruba teachers required to fulfil the aim.
