Education ministry bans harmful apps on campus



In a notice recently issued by the ministry’s general office, content, links, functions and information security of apps should be strictly reviewed and filed to higher education authorities for approval.

Schools should avoid using apps to increase the course load for students and educational apps used on campus are not allowed to charge students.

Information should be protected and privacy leaks should be prevented.

65-year retirement age for teachers- Mallam Adamu


The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on Thursday, said that President Muhammadu Buhari was in support of increasing the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Adamu made this known during a public hearing on the need to insulate teachers from the retirement age for public servants organised by the House of Reps Joint Committee on Basic Education and Public Service.

Adamu informed the committee that the Nigerian Union of Teachers had submitted the new retirement age proposal to the ministry and the National Assembly for approval.

Nasarawa gov dismisses NASPOLY Rector, Registrar, Bursar


The Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Al-Makura, on Friday approved the dismissal of the Rector of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Dr Silas Gyar.

The statement added that the dismissal took effect from November 28, 2018.

Overseas students turn away from US


The number of new international students enrolling at United States universities and colleges went down by almost 7% last year, according to official data published this month.

It’s the second year in a row that the number of new international enrolments in the US has declined, denting a market worth $42bn (£33bn) to the US economy last year.

Prof Simon Marginson, of Oxford University, an expert on trends in international students, says there is “little doubt” this downturn is related to the Trump administration.

Kaduna State College of Education Shut


The Management of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, has ordered the closure of the institution with immediate effect following a violent protest by students over an alleged shift in examination date.

A statement issued on Tuesday by Danladi Aduwu, Ag. Head of Information/Public Relation of the college, said the school would remain closed till further notice.

The statement explained that the decision was to ensure the protection of lives and property, and urged all students to vacate the college premises with immediate effect.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the students were not happy over plans to postpone their semester examination scheduled to begin on November 31.

NNPC/CNL JV Pledges Commitment to Quality Education


The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Joint Venture has expressed its commitment to improving the quality of education in the country.

The Managing Director, CNL, Jeffrey Ewing said this at the award presentation ceremony for the 2018 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition held at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre, Effurun, Delta State.

The competition was organised by NNPC/CNL Joint Venture, in partnership with the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) and the Delta State Ministry of Education. It was initiated to promote the study of the subject among secondary school students of Delta State and in memory of Stephen Awokoya, a chemistry professor, who died on March 15, 1985.

Former academy head given £850,000 payoff


The former head of a controversial academy is being paid an £850,000 severance package out of proceeds from a private leisure centre run on the school grounds, MPs have heard.Pupils at the former Durand Academy school in Stockwell meet Michael Gove in 2013.

Details of the payment to Sir Greg Martin, the former head of the Durand Academy in Stockwell, south London, emerged on Monday during a hearing of the Commons public accounts committee, which is investigating academy accounts and performance.

It is the latest development in a long-running saga involving Martin, who was knighted for services to education and was once a favourite of Tory ministers, before falling out of favour as concerns grew about financial management and governance at the school.
