The Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, Prof. Steve Afolami, has said there is no need to declare a state of emergency in private universities.
Afolami said this during the third matriculation ceremony of Augustine University for the 2017/2018 academic session, which held at Epe, Lagos State.
It will be recalled that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, had announced the Federal Government’s plan to declare a state of emergency in the education sector by April 2018.
But Afolami said many private universities rejected the plan, explaining that they only need inclusion in government grants and scholarships.

Teacher treks 42km to school daily, honoured with standing fan
A teacher who walks 42km to school has been rewarded with a standing fan, in appreciation of his dedicated service.
Awudu Kombian, who teaches at Warvi D/A Primary School, Ghana, received the gift at the parade to mark Ghana’s 61st Independence, which held on Tuesday.
Apart from travelling such a long distance, Kombian was the only teacher in the school, and also doubled as the headmaster until recently when three teachers were posted to the school.
The school, which has a population of about 74 pupils with three classrooms, was solely taken care of by Kombian for more than a year.
As a headmaster, he performed other tasks and so the school was always closed down whenever he fell ill or travelled.

Senate Rejects Bill To Include Skirts In NYSC Uniform
A bill to amend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act to include skirts in NYSC uniform could not scale second reading at the Senate on Wednesday.
The bill was rejected following concerns that such amendment required altering the constitution which involved a longer process.
Soliciting support of his colleagues, Emmanuel Bwacha (Taraba-PDP) said the amendment was meant to give corps members the liberty of digressing from the rigid adherence to the NYSC uniform specification.
“This particular amendment especially in section 13 and 16 of the principal act is to achieve the following objectives; increase the penalty for offences contained in the Act to make such fines reflect the present value of the naira. To ensure that regulations made by the directorate prescribing drills and uniform for exercise do not violate certain religious practices.
“The uniform adopted for corps members have become a basis for controversy between the directorate and the public. In fact, some corps members drop out of service because of conflict they’ve witnessed.
“The major bone of contention is that some of the drills and uniform contravene the religious belief of corps members and invariably denying them right of religion, thought and conscience.”
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who took over from Bukola Saraki in presiding over the plenary called the attention of Mr. Bwacha to the provisions of Section 9 (2) of the Constitution.
“Section 9 (2) of the Constitution says that for you to amend the Constitution, it has to pass through the senate and the state assemblies. We have to follow the same process as if we are amending the Constitution. What we are trying to do here is like to amend the NYSC Act. I understand your position, we have to follow that process.”

Send your child to school or risk imprisonment
The Bayelsa State Government has vowed to arrest and prosecute any parent who refuses to allow his child to acquire formal education.
The decision came on the heels of the signing into law of the Compulsory Primary and Secondary Education Law by Governor Seriake Dickson.
Addressing journalists on Thursday after a meeting by the State Executive Council, the Commissioner for Education, Jonathan Obuebite, said that with the signing of the bill into law, every child of school age must be enrolled in any of the various model schools in the state. Obuebite warned that the parents or guardians of any child seen loitering or hawking during school hours would be dealt with as provided in the new law.

Trump Floats Bonuses for Trained, Armed Teachers
PRESIDENT Donald Trump on Thursday suggested rewarding teachers who are trained how to use firearms and have a conceal carry permit with bonuses – one of several ideas the administration is considering as a way to prevent another school shooting in the wake of a Florida school shooting in which a former student killed 17 children and adults.
The president called for “a little bit of a bonus,” according to the White House pool report, for teachers who go through “rigorous training” to carry concealed weapons.
“You can’t hire enough security guards,” Trump said. “But you could have concealed on the teachers.”

Nigerians are receiving expired education, says U.S. varsity VC
Vice Chancellor of the University of America, California, Prof. Gamalier O. Prince, has said that the change mantra of the Federal Government must fix the educational system if there must be positive improvement in the country.
Prince, who stated that the nation’s academic system expired long ago, said that the leadership of Nigeria had continued to fail because the educational system failed to impact the right qualities and had not shown signs of recovery.
Prince said: “People in Nigeria are getting expired education. That is why you see people who studied engineering and are not able to do engineering feat. You see people who studied computer science and are not able to understand anything or diagnose computer language and what have you. This is because Nigeria’s educational system is a dilapidated one.

The headmaster of a leading British boarding school has threatened to expel pupils if they have romantic relationships.
Toby Belfield, head of Ruthin School in north Wales, also said student romances would affect any university references.
In a leaked email to students in their final three years, seen by Sky News, he wrote: “Last year I expelled two students for sexual contact, in school.
“Relationships can start at university – not at Ruthin School.
“I STRONGLY disapprove of any boyfriend/girlfriend relationships – and it will ALWAYS affect any university reference I write… I will put together a list of any student with a boyfriend or girlfriend
