NYSC suspends orientation course


The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) has suspended the commencement of the 2018 Batch ” C” corps members’ orientation of those deployed to Kaduna State.

The state government had imposed a 24-hour curfew on the state to halt the bloody attacks escalating from killings in Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru Local Government Area of the State few days ago.

World Bank to boost technical education


The World Bank says it has selected Benue State to benefit from the pilot scheme to boost technical skills acquisition in the country.

A Senior Education Specialist, Dr Tuned Adekola, during a visit to Governor Samuel Ortom on Tuesday, said the project was in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education.

Adekola stated that the main focus of the programme would be on apprenticeship, where youths would be trained in technical and vocational skills, in accordance with the manpower demands in the selected states.

Standard of nation’s education not falling – Okebukola


Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, on Monday said that the standard of the nation’s education system was not falling but is rather enhanced daily by the Commission.

Okebukola made the assertion while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of the Eighth Convocation and honorary award of doctorate degree of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos.

He said the current NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, was on a revatilisation mission to improve quality in the university system and enhance standards.

According to him, the standards turned out yearly by the Commission are richer and higher in terms of scope than the previous year.

Polytechnic lecturerers threatened to shut down the nation’s polytechnics anytime soon.


The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have threatened to shut down the nation’s polytechnics anytime soon.

They have warned the government to order the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to stop intimidating its members into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) platform when their emoluments have not been secured.

The union is also accusing the government of not keeping faith with the memorandum of settlements signed with the union in 2017.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has banned Benue State University and the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, from sending their students for the mandatory one-year national service.

The scheme placed a two-year ban on both schools following an alleged discovery of negligence and evidence of age manipulation.

However, in reaction, the Vice Chancellor of the Benue State University, Professor Moses Kembe, during a meeting with the Scheme pleaded for leniency.

Kembe had in the meeting which ended in a deadlock, maintained that the university management was not involved in age manipulation. He explained that the age limits were manipulated by the students themselves.

FG To Invest More In Health, Education In 2019 — Minister


The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would invest more on health and education in 2019.
The Minister gave the assurance in a statement issued by Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relations of the Ministry, on Sunday in Abuja.
According to Akinola, the Minister gave the assurance during a peer review meeting with Chief Medical Directors and Medical Director across the country.
“The meeting, was to enable the participants exchange ideas, share experiences and appreciate challenges confronting each facility in order to help government address them and if necessary capture them in the 2019 budget,” Akinola said.
Adewole said government would not only invest more money on health but also on education.

NIBSS reaffirm its support for educational system


THE Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, NIBSS, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the nation’s educational system as the focus of its Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, programme.

Meanwhile, the company has supported twelve secondary schools in Lagos with office furniture for teaching staff as part of its CSR programme this year. The programme was flagged off with the presentation of the office furniture to Eti-osa Community Junior Secondary School and Obadore Junior Secondary School, Lagos.

Dolapo-Osinbajo meets 1,000 schoolgirls over poor education


The wife of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, is set to meet with 1000 schoolgirls drawn from private and public schools nationwide to discuss issues of gender discrimination including access to education, sexual harassments and violence.

Our correspondent learnt that Osinbajo will be meeting the girls in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as part of the activities of the International Day of the Girl-child in Nigeria, under the theme, “Empower girls: Before, during and after the conflict.”

The meeting, scheduled for the coming week, is being organised by the National Centre for Women Development of the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the President.

The Director-General of the NCWD, Mrs Mary Ekpere-Eta, in a statement released on Thursday, said some 150 schoolgirls would be taken through a session on skills development, while the National Gender Action Plan would be inaugurated during the meeting by the Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, and the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Aisha Abubakar.

Employ more qualified teachers


The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary School Teachers, Mr Olusegun Adediran, has urged the Osun State Government to employ more qualified teachers to teach in government-owned secondary schools in the state.

Adediran said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on the sidelines of programme organised by the union to mark the 2018 World Teachers Day.

The union leader said that some teachers had retired from schools and that new ones should be employed to fill the vacancies left behind but he advised that only qualified teachers should be engaged.

Felabration opens in Lagos with secondary schools debate


As part of the celebrations to mark the 80th posthumous birthday of Nigerian musical icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, students from secondary schools in Lagos State debated on the theme, “Should State Police be introduced in Nigeria?”

The debate, which took place at Freedom Park in Lagos, was part of the annual music festival, Felabration, which commemorates the life and times of the Afrobeat legend.

Felabration was conceived in 1998 by Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti in memory and celebration of her father, Fela.

No fewer than 10 public and private secondary schools across Lagos participated in the debate
