FG unveils e-learning portal


The Federal Government has unveiled a Public Service Learning Management System to cater to the educational needs of an estimated 10 million civil servants across the federation.

The Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, said the new platform would assist the Federal Government in the provision of capacity building, examination, data management and other services to the Nigerian public service.

She stated this in Abuja on Monday during the inauguration of the PSLMS, held at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria.

Oyo-Ita said the new platform would also help to generate revenue for the government, reduce the cost of training for civil servants, increase efficiency of the public service, track staff development, as well as provide a platform for Nigerians in the Diaspora to access information about the public service.”

ASUU warns of imminent anarchy in UNILAG


The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Lagos, UNILAG chapter has warned of imminent anarchy in the institution over an alleged autocratic handling of the school by the Pro-Chancellor

The statement read: “The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University of Lagos Governing Council, Dr. Wale Babalaki, SAN, activities since assumption of office are best described as autocratic, meddlesome and dictatorial.

“For example, he not only brooks no opposition during Council meetings because of his over bloated sense of personal importance and intellectual capability.

“He acted like an Imperial Majesty by ordering the reinstatement of the Director of Sports, contrary to the recommendations of a Senate Committee set up to investigate the various cases of malfeasance against the Director of Sports.

President Buhari approves NYSC


President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Amendment Act, to allow the institution to operate as all other universities in the country.

With the assent, graduates of the NOUN can now participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School.

Presidential Assistant on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, announced the assent of the President while addressing State House reporters on Friday in Abuja.

Colleges of Education to award first degrees

A bill to repeal the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 1986 and to re-enact Federal Colleges of Education, 2018, was read for the second time on Wednesday.

Barau Jibrin, the senator who led the debate of the bill, moved that the bill be amended to accommodate new provisions – one of which is to allow Federal Colleges of Education award first degrees, like universities.

Although, Colleges of Education currently award Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), Mr Jibrin said the issuance of the new degree would only be on the approval of regulatory agencies governing the institutions.

60m illiterates exist in Nigeria- Minister of Education


Malam Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education on Wednesday in Kano said that Nigeria has about 60 million illiterate youths and adults.

Education Minister Adamu Adamu, who was represented by Mr Prinzo James, Deputy Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Ministry of Education, said this at the 2018 International Literacy Day Celebration. He said out of this figure, females accounted for nearly 60 percent of the population, while a total of 11 million children were out of school. According to him, the increasing low level of literacy skills achieved by the millions of learners who completed some formal school education, made the situation more complicated. Adamu said the present state of affairs called for urgent attention as the country strives to ensure the attainment of SDGs by 2030.

Cowbellpedia Teachers of the Year award


Kehinde Oludare and Oluwaseun Makinde have emerged winners of the Teachers’ edition of Cowbellpedia Mathematics Quiz Show.

The event, which was part of the activities organised to mark the 2018 World Teachers Day, saw 12 teachers whose pupils made it to the finals of the 2017 edition of the competition compete for the best in both categories.

Expressing his appreciation to the organisers of the contest, Oludare of Bibo Oluwa Academy, Ilesha, Osun State, who  emerged best in the senior category, said, “Beyond passion, Mathematics teachers must have hunger to teach the subject. Initiatives like this have helped to stimulate the interest of pupils and teachers in the subject.

National Economic Council is working towards declaring a state of emergency


The National Economic Council (NEC) is working towards declaring a state of emergency in the nation’s education sector.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the monthly meeting of the council presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

All the 36 state governors are members of the council.

Shaibu said a finally decision of the matter would be taken at the next council meeting holding in November.

He said the council at its Thursday meeting received interim report from its ad-hoc committee on the revival of education in Nigeria.

The deputy governor said the committee recommended that all state governors should declare a state of emergency on education.

COEASU threatens strike, condemns FG’s ‘No-work-no-pay’ rule


The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union has said that its members will not be intimidated by the Federal Government’s no-work-no-pay rule of the Federal Government.

The union, in a statement addressed to lecturers in federal colleges of education across the country, claimed that its members had been receiving “fractional and mutilated salaries” for some years.

It described the government’s decision not to pay striking lecturers as a sign of insensitivity to the labour force of the country.

The COEASU National President, Mr NuhuOgirima, in the release obtained by our correspondent, called on all the members of the Union across the country to prepare for a prolonged battle.

Obama Foundation has announced the launch of the Global Girls Alliance


The Obama Foundation has announced the launch of the Global Girls Alliance, a program focussed on supporting access to education for adolescent girls worldwide.

“When you educate a girl you educate a family, a community, a country,” said former First Lady Michelle Obama, launching the program in an interview on NBC show Today.

“If we care about climate change, poverty…then we need to care about education. Right now, there are 98 million adolescent girls who are not in school.”

The program will support grassroots organisations, projects and leaders dedicated to girls’ education around the world.
