Worries, as more Nigerian undergraduates commit suicide…
On Monday, an undergraduate of the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Aduba Daniel, reportedly committed suicide by drinking a deadly insecticide known locally as ‘Sniper’.
Daniel was found writhing in pain and immediately rushed to a hospital in the Amassoma area, where it was realised that he had drunk the whole bottle. Also, it was discovered that the deceased had carry-overs in four courses and this must have led him to take his own life.
The incident, as sad as it is, is the latest among several cases of suicide recorded in Nigerian universities between 2017 and 2018.
In October, 2017, a16-year old 100-level student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Miss Mercy Afolaranmi, allegedly took her own life by drinking rat poison mixed with battery extracts. The reason given for Afolaranmi’s suicide by sources close to her was “emotional pressure.”

Prisoners ‘break free’ to grab doctorate degrees
Two inmates at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos, have registered for doctorate degrees having successfully completed their Master programmes.
Despite the fact that prisons in Nigeria have been generally described as breeding ground for crime, since incarcerating offenders is said to make prisoners more hardened because they learn latest tricks.
However, many inmates, particularly those on the condemned list, are now more determined to turn a new leaf as they have thrown themselves into learning new vocational skills that would make them better persons, even while still serving their jail terms.
This manifested recently when two criminals, one serving a life jail term while the other awaiting his death sentence, cashed in on the opportunity created by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to enhance themselves educationally.
Tunwashe Kabiru and Oladipupo Moshood, in spite of their incarceration have now enrolled for Doctorate Degrees in Business Administration and Peace and Conflict Resolution, respectively. It was indeed, a development worthy of emulation.
Kabiru, 42, said that he was currently serving a life sentence at the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Lagos, after being found guilty of murder.

ASUU urges FG to declare emergency on education sector
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to declare a state of emergency in the country’s education sector without further delay. It also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that Nigerian children were exposed to global educational standards just as his children had abroad.
Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Dr. Deji Omole, who stated this in Ibadan at the weekend, added that it has become imperative to remind the minister that the future of the children of the masses must not be used to play politics.
He wondered why in the last week of April, the plan to declare state of emergency in the sector had not been perfected, as earlier pronounced by the minister.ASUU said it was sad for a government that had failed to improve access to quality education for Nigerian youths who are yearning for education to state that the same youth were lazy and waiting for freebies.
“What has the government done to salvage the condition of 12 million out-of-school children in Nigeria? What has the government done to ensure employment for over 16 million unemployed Nigerians? He asked.
He cautioned that if the government fails to attend to the needs of the youth, they would become a nightmare for the country in future.ASUU recalled that the minister had raised the hope of declaring emergency in the educational sector in April apparently to proffer solutions to the low quality of education being offered Nigerian children.
