Religious extremists ‘trying to pervert education’
Religious extremists are using schools to narrow children’s horizons and “pervert education”, England’s chief inspector of schools has warned. Amanda Spielman said some community leaders see schools as vehicles to “indoctrinate impressionable minds” – with extremist ideology in some cases.
Ofsted inspectors are increasingly coming into contact with such extremists, she said.
She is asking head teachers to confront those who foster extremist behaviour.
It comes after an east London head teacher who tried to stop girls under the age of eight from wearing a hijab in the classroom was subjected to a campaign of abuse.
“Rather than adopting a passive liberalism that says anything goes, for fear of causing offence, schools leaders should be promoting a muscular liberalism,” Ms Spielman has said at a conference held by the Church of England in London.

NESG advocates far-reaching reforms in education, health sectors for access to economic opportunities
The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) says reforms in the education and health sectors, accompanied by strategic investments, are necessary to improve quality of life and obtain better educational outcome in the country.
NESG stated this in its 2018 Macroeconomic Outlook titled “Will Nigeria’s growth be inclusive in 2018 and beyond?”
The outlook, obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday, indicated that development of human capabilities, access to quality education and healthcare were basic rights of citizens.
NESG advised that government policies should be tailored to significantly support both sectors to improve standard of living in the country.
“The relevance of education remains unclear, it is apparent that the educational system is raising graduates that find it difficult to fit into the workplace, even as innovation and entrepreneurship learning are not picking up as expected.
“Healthcare in Nigeria is in a dire state; this is evident in the high infant and under-five mortality rate.

“It took eight years of my life before I went to the university. I am catching them young and giving them a direction from the beginning, and this is a thing of joy for me.
“We should understand that every child is ours. We cannot just train our own children and leave others,’’ Olulade said.
According to him, there are some families who cannot afford to send their children or their wards to public schools, not to talk of private schools.

International students bring economic benefits to the UK!
International students are worth £20bn to the UK economy, says a report from the Higher Education Policy Institute.
The analysis says on top of tuition fees, their spending has become a major factor in supporting local economies.
London alone gains £4.6bn – with Sheffield the biggest beneficiary in proportion to its economy.
The think tank’s director, Nick Hillman, says the figures support calls to remove students from immigration targets.
There are about 230,000 students arriving each year for university courses in the UK – most of them postgraduates, with China the most common country of origin.
“Fewer international students would mean a lot fewer jobs in all areas of the UK, because international students spend money in their universities, in their local economies,” he says.
“It is literally the sandwich shops, the bike shops, the taxi firms; it is the night clubs, it’s the bookshops.
“Without international students, some of the local companies might go bust. Some of the local resident population would lose their jobs,” says Mr Hillman.
The Higher Education Policy Institute, which carried out the study with education company Kaplan, argues that the UK should have a more positive approach to students from overseas – and separate them from the wider debate about immigration.
