Your investment in health, education not good enough– Bill Gates
Bill Gates, world’s second richest man, says the federal government’s investments in young people, especially in areas of health and education, is not good enough.
He said this in an interview with CNN. The co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reiterated the comments he made when he spoke at the expanded national economic council meeting on Thursday.
At the meeting which was presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Gates had said the execution priorities of the economic recovery and growth plan do not reflect the true needs of Nigerians.
“The Nigerian government’s economic recovery and growth plan identify investing in our people as one of three strategic objectives. But the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital,” he had said.
“People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.”
Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, who was at the meeting had defended the federal government, saying Gates’ comment was incorrect.
But in the chat with CNN, the billionaire businessman defended his criticism of the Nigerian government.
He said Nigeria would become an engine of growth if the government gets health and education right.
“As a partner in Nigeria, I am saying the current plan is inadequate. Nigeria has all these young people and the current quality and quantity of investment in these young generations; in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN.
“If they can get health and education right, they will be an engine of growth not just for themselves but for all of Africa.”
Teacher treks 42km to school daily, honoured with standing fan
A teacher who walks 42km to school has been rewarded with a standing fan, in appreciation of his dedicated service.
Awudu Kombian, who teaches at Warvi D/A Primary School, Ghana, received the gift at the parade to mark Ghana’s 61st Independence, which held on Tuesday.
Apart from travelling such a long distance, Kombian was the only teacher in the school, and also doubled as the headmaster until recently when three teachers were posted to the school.
The school, which has a population of about 74 pupils with three classrooms, was solely taken care of by Kombian for more than a year.
As a headmaster, he performed other tasks and so the school was always closed down whenever he fell ill or travelled.

Trump Floats Bonuses for Trained, Armed Teachers
PRESIDENT Donald Trump on Thursday suggested rewarding teachers who are trained how to use firearms and have a conceal carry permit with bonuses – one of several ideas the administration is considering as a way to prevent another school shooting in the wake of a Florida school shooting in which a former student killed 17 children and adults.
The president called for “a little bit of a bonus,” according to the White House pool report, for teachers who go through “rigorous training” to carry concealed weapons.
“You can’t hire enough security guards,” Trump said. “But you could have concealed on the teachers.”

UK raises overseas education aid by 50%
The UK will increase aid for education in developing countries by 50% to £75m per year, International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt will promise.
The government has faced criticism over its ring-fenced commitment to overseas aid – and this announcement marks a new emphasis on education projects.
Ms Mordaunt said supporting schools in poorer countries was a “hard-headed” investment in a more prosperous future.
But aid agencies warned the amounts promised were still insufficient.
Ms Mordaunt will make the announcement of £225m funding over three years at a global education conference in Senegal, hosted by France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Senegal’s President Macky Sall.
