The suspension has been a big surprise to us : OAU Students

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have reacted with a mixture of surprises to the National Universities Commission recent suspension of accreditation for six of the courses offered in the institution.

The NUC, according to a report by The Cable, had suspended the university’s Law, Dentistry, Botany, Fine and Applied Arts, Family Nutrition and Consumer Science programmes.

Initially, Medical Rehabilitation was listed among the courses, but investigation showed that it was not really affected by the commission’s decision.

Some of the students of the institution whose courses were affected by the development, in separate telephone interviews with our correspondent, said they thought the suspension was just a “joke” from the NUC. One of them, a 300 level law student, Badrudeen Olawale, wondered how the commission arrived at the decision not to accredit OAU’s law for the 2018/2019 academic session.

He said, “The suspension has been a big surprise to us. Many of us still find it difficult to believe that the NUC could do this to Obafemi Awolowo University. I can tell you that the Faculty of Law here is one of the best in the country in terms of structure, facilities and academic prowess. What else does the commission want the faculty to provide?

OAU loses accreditation for Law, Dentistry, Botany

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has lost accreditation for four of the courses offered in the institution.

The National Universities Commission reportedly suspended the university’s law, dentistry, medical rehabilitation, and botany programmes, The Cable reports.

Prospective students who selected any of the four courses in the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination have been asked to change their course or institution.

A message was sent to the candidates by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to inform them of the changes.

“Your first choice course did not receive accreditation. Login to your profile and change course/institutions,” the message read.

This is not the first time the institution is experiencing this such as the accreditation of the Law Faculty was previously withdrawn in 2006.

The Cable notes that there are also reports that botany never got full accreditation since its inception as a course at the university.

The institution’s spokesperson, Mr Abiodun Olarenwaju, confirmed the development to The Cable.

Olarenwaju, however, said the withdrawal of accreditation would be sorted out by September.

“We are going to sort it out, latest by September, and everything will come back to shape,” he was quoted as saying.

NANS speaks on sack of OAU lecturer

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has lauded the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife for relieving a lecturer, Prof. Richard Akindele of his duty for involving in a sex scandal.

DAILY POST reports that the Obafemi Awolowo University sacked Professor Richard Akindele for allegedly demanding sex from Monica Osagie to upgrade her mark.

The NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, made this remark in a statement on Thursday in Enugu.

Okereafor said that NANS believed that sacking the lecturer was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to the fight against all forms of Human Rights abuse within government and its institutions.

He said that it would serve as a deterrent to other lecturers, who might be nurturing similar habit or already indulging in such misconduct on campuses across the federation.

Okereafor said that NANS implored the university to as a matter of urgency, prosecute the lecturer in a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full wrath of the law.

According to him, NANS is also calling on the female students to shun indecent dressing within and outside the campuses so that they can always protect the dignity of motherhood.

“The leadership of the over 40.1 million Nigerian students both at home and the diaspora under the auspices of NANS, salutes the authority of OAU for its decision,’’ he said.

OAU Sex For Mark: Monica Osagie Scored 45 And Not 33

A post- graduate student of the Department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University , Ms . Monica Osagie, who accused Prof . Richard Akindele , of demanding sex from her to upgrade her mark has appeared before the committee set up by the university to investigate the scandal.

While narrating what happened during the meeting to journalists, she said Osagie scored 45 in the course which Akindele taught her and not 33 that the lecturer claimed that she scored.

“ The school reaffirmed that she passed and that she scored 45 and not 33 and the man (prof .) did not give her mark . Apparently the man was using the 33 as a bait to get her.

“ She talked about her understanding of what happened. She talked about the fact that she is a good student and that she passed all her courses. That she shouldn’t have failed the course and that she checked and found out that she passed and that the 33 the man talked about must have been his (lecturer) imagination .
“ It must also have been a way of negotiating with her to get her to bow to his wish , which was the reason she recorded the conversation .”
