Return unauthorized levies – Gov Fayemi
The Deputy Governor, Bisi Egbeyemi, who gave the directive, in Ado-Ekiti, ordered a full compliance stressed that the Education Development Levy and other unauthorized fees remain abolished in the state. Egbeyemi, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Odunayo Ogunmola, further directed that evidence of such refunds must be brought to the Ministry of Education for verification.

WAEC to publish names of schools, candidates, invigilators and supervisors caught aiding and abetting examination malpractice
The committee, which is the highest decision-making organ of WAEC on examination-related matters in Nigeria, made the recommendation to WAEC, ANCOPSS and all the ministries of education in the 36 states of the federation, in a statement issued at the end of its 66th meeting in Lagos.
According to the statement, the committee had received reports on cases of irregularity, special and clemency arising from the conduct of the WASSCE for both private candidates and school candidates in 2017 and 2018 during the meeting.
Free education for girls in Kaduna public schools
Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has ordered the full implementation of free education for female students in the state’s public secondary schools to improve girl-child education.
According to the commissioner, 191,445 female students currently in Kaduna public schools will immediately benefit from the government’s new directive which will cost it N143 million every term and N430 million annually.
The commissioner said the government’s decision will remove any hindrance to girls acquiring quality education as they make up a majority of the over 10 million out-of-school children in the country.
Experts caution schools on teachers’ recruitment
Enugu State Police Command arrested the head teacher of a primary school in the Enugu-Ezike area of the state, Mr Nathaniel Idoko, for defiling four female pupils between the ages of five and six. Idoko blamed his crime on ‘Satan’.
The children, aged between two and 14 years at the time, were pupils of private schools, except one public school in Epe, Lagos State. Most of the incidents took place in the schools’ premises, save for two occuring in either the victim’s residence or that of the accused.

Lawmaker seeks ICT education in schools
The senator representing the Lagos East District at the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa, has said education without Information Communication Technology is inadequate.
The senator, who spoke on Friday at the handing over of computers and furniture to the Orimedu Community High School, Orimedu, in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, said the need for ICT in Nigerian schools and the ability to use computers effectively must become an essential part of education.
He said, “In Nigeria of today, if we take a look at our primary and secondary schools, we will notice that chalkboard and textbooks still dominate classroom activities; there is a need for a change in the status quo.
“With the high demand for computer literacy, especially by employers, we must ensure that our children have access to computers right from primary school for development of their ICT skills.”
He said he had decided to provide the necessary tools to acquire computer skills in schools in his constituent to boost ICT education.

NAUS urges FG to build technology hubs
The National Association of University Students has urged the Federal Government to support entrepreneurship by building technology hubs for graduates and students across the country, where new skills and innovations could be learnt.
The NAUS Chair of Presidents, Solomon Adodo, stated this in Abuja at a press briefing on Friday, noting that the establishment of such technology hubs was an effective way to reduce poverty and unemployment in the country.
Adodo said there must be public-private partnership to drive development in the country, adding that the briefing was also to recognise one of the “country’s most innovative private investors and Managing Director of Jamub Group of Companies, Jacob Momoh.”

FG begins audit of schools nationwide
The Federal Government, through the Universal Basic Education Commission, has said that it will commence the audit of pupils and teaching personnel in public and private-owned schools nationwide so as to collect data for the purpose of policy planning and implementation.
The UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, who stated this at a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, also said the audit of the teaching personnel in schools would begin by April 29 in the southern states and June 3 in the northern states.
Bobboyi noted that the exercise was aimed at collating reliable data for the national databank in line with the Nigeria’s Education Management Information System policy.
