Trump Floats Bonuses for Trained, Armed Teachers

PRESIDENT Donald Trump on Thursday suggested rewarding teachers who are trained how to use firearms and have a conceal carry permit with bonuses – one of several ideas the administration is considering as a way to prevent another school shooting in the wake of a Florida school shooting in which a former student killed 17 children and adults.

The president called for “a little bit of a bonus,” according to the White House pool report, for teachers who go through “rigorous training” to carry concealed weapons.

“You can’t hire enough security guards,” Trump said. “But you could have concealed on the teachers.”

Experts say school girls should not be flogged

Experts say school girls should not be flogged

Teachers administer corporal punishment for disciplinary purposes on students especially in public schools. The punishment, which involves flogging the erring student either on the buttocks or on the hands with a whip, is meant to create a more disciplined environment.

On the other hand, while scores of educationists are of the view that corporal punishment is a humiliating way of instilling discipline and should be abolished, others believe that without it, students may take a wrong turn in life.

Recently, there was huge public outrage in Nasarawa State following a viral video on social media showing the clip of a male teacher caning female students of Government Science Secondary School Nassarawa-Eggon on their buttocks, over lateness. The state government swiftly reacted by abrogating corporal punishment in schools and suspended some teachers from the said school

Secret Teacher: subjects like art are being sidelined – but they matter

It’s Monday afternoon and I’m teaching a class of 10- and 11-year-olds French. Last week they wrote a set of descriptive sentences about animals and today they’re going to turn their descriptions into picture books.

“Once you’ve finished with your sentences, you’re going to illustrate them to reflect what you’ve written,” I tell the class.

Silence.

“Any questions?”

A hand pops up.

“Do we have to draw the pictures? Can’t we just write the sentences?”

“You need to draw the pictures as well. You’re making a picture book, remember?”

“But I can’t draw, Miss.”

If you must flog, don’t do that when you are provoked.

The deceased, a class mistress in charge of Senior Secondary School (SSS1) was said to have flogged a female student over negligence of assigned duty as well as insubordination.

The mother and a man, on receiving the report of the flogging from her daughter, were said to have rushed to the school where they allegedly beat the tutor to death.

In view of the ugly development, some teachers have said they would rather respond to students’ inappropriate behaviour through other punitive measures than caning them.
